Things to do: Art
Whether you are an artist or simply enjoy the arts, you’ll find a growing movement to showcase art in the National Heritage Corridor. Look for galleries, museums, craft festivals, art trails, murals, and sculpture, as well as great places to create art of your own in each region.
Drawn to Water
From morning mist to colorful sunsets to winding water that merges with sky, the canal draws artists to its shores to paint, sketch, and photograph the many moods of the historic waterway. Extraordinary architecture in canal towns and remnants of engineering marvels also present artistic subjects unique to the Erie Canalway.
Each canal region presents distinct opportunities for artists. The Erie Canalway Trail and waterfront parks offer excellent access to waterfront sites for photography and painting.
Murals
“Mural Mania” is growing! This arts initiative along the canal aims to preserve history through community art. You'll find historical scenes on more than 25 buildings from Syracuse to Middleport...and more are on the way.

Folk Art
Immigrants from around the world traveled the Erie Canal in the 1800s. Those that settled along its shores brought rich cultural and artistic traditions, including music, food, and art, that still endure today. New York’s First Nations have also passed on traditional arts for generations. Seek out the work of folk artists at a variety of venues, including museum collections, gift shops, art galleries, farmers’ markets, and craft shows.
